#218 Kangaroo fossil jaw

Kangaroo Jaw

Macropus titan
King Creek, Darling Downs
Queensland, Australia
Late Pleistocene
5 inches long
$215.00

G'day mate.  Macropus titan is an extinct kangaroo that was 25%
bigger than today's largest living kangaroo, the Gray Kangaroo.
Of course it is now illegal to import or export vertebrate fossils to or from Australia, and this specimen came out of Australia long before the ban went into effect.

Now note the site where this specimen comes from, Darling Downs.
The bone preservation is superior to other sites from down under.  Most kangaroo and wallaby bone specimens have a rough red grainy texture that looks like it might fall apart at any moment (hint hint).  The bone preservation of this specimen is smooth and solid, and it is the most complete one that I've ever seen.

Factoid:  Although Kangaroos and Manatees are unrelated, they are the only animals to have developed the exact same bizarre tooth replacement system.  I'll leave it at that.
